James Lyng High School’s music program works with an expansive notion of urban arts, starting from where students “are at”. This means beginning with students’ varied musical tastes, which include rap music, R&B and the full spectrum of rock and pop music, from songs featured on mainstream radio to punk and hardcore.
The music program, guided by its philosophy of student-centred learning, has naturally evolved to embrace elements of two established musical pedagogies, Musical Futures and Hip-Hop Based Music Education.
Driven by their own interests in music, students learn to rap, record, create electronic instrumentals, play electric guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and sing. Student engagement through popular music is at the heart of James Lyng’s music program. They embrace a philosophy of learning by doing, and emphasize musical creation.
